If he's a Unitarian, that would explain a few things. Even C.S. Lewis flirted with Universalism, but didn't have quite so many issues with his theology, IMO. I believe, after hearing a local interview with Paul Edwards on wlqv am1500, that this fellow is a Universalist Unitarian as you pointed out "The author often flirts with the idea that everyone may one day be redeemed".
